Derby Brain

Derby Brain is a state of consciousness in which the mysteries of roller

derby reveal themselves to the devoted. It is also the name of a work

in progress documentary with the Bellingham Roller Betties. This will be my

fourth season filming with the Betties and I’m approaching derby brain.

It’s a complex sport, a rich culture with tribes of warrior women on skates.

I love it.

Season four and my mind is opening up to roller derby, I can see the structure of it.

Working with Sofia Loref on the helmet cam is really fun. She is Outside Referee on this bout.

I like to work from the little blue box they have for the media to stand in the infield.

The two points of view combine to really get inside the action.
